Country braces for monsoon season with heavy rain forecast this weekend

Pakistan Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall Forecast From June 26–28, Risk of Flooding and Landslides

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from June 26 to June 28, raising concerns of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides across various regions of the country.

Widespread Rain Expected Across Multiple Regions

According to PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, combined with a westerly weather system, will bring widespread rain and storms to areas including:

  • Murree and Galliyat

  • Upper and Southern Punjab

  • Dera Ghazi Khan

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Kashmir

Residents in these regions have been advised to remain cautious, as the risk of landslides remains high in vulnerable hilly areas. Travelers are urged to avoid non-essential journeys through mountainous routes during this period.

Safety Alert for Infrastructure and Property

Authorities have also warned that weak structures—such as kacha houses, old buildings, electric poles, and unsecured vehicles—could be at risk of damage due to high winds and heavy rainfall.

The PMD has emphasized the need for emergency preparedness, advising local administrations and the public to stay alert and take preventive measures.

Regional Forecast for Sindh

In Sindh province, partly cloudy to cloudy weather is expected on Friday, along with rain and thunderstorms in key districts including:

  • Tharparkar

  • Mirpurkhas

  • Umerkot

  • Khairpur

  • Dadu

  • Sukkur

  • Larkana

  • Shaheed Benazirabad

  • Hyderabad

  • Karachi

Isolated heavy showers are likely in some areas, which could lead to temporary waterlogging and traffic disruptions, especially in urban centers.

Recent Rainfall and Temperature Trends

In the past 24 hours, rain and thundershowers were recorded in:

  • Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Upper Punjab

  • Islamabad

  • Kashmir

Heavy rainfall was observed in Malam Jabba (70mm) and Kasur (63mm). Meanwhile, extremely hot and humid conditions continue in other parts of the country, with Dalbandin recording the highest temperature at 46°C, followed closely by several other cities at 45°C.

Public Advisory

The PMD urges citizens to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms

  • Avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone or hilly areas

  • Secure loose items around homes and properties

  • Monitor official weather updates and follow guidance from local authorities
