Punjab Launches Major Evacuation as Floods Impact Over 1.4 Million People

LAHORE: The Punjab government has initiated one of its largest evacuation operations in decades after rising floodwaters affected more than 1.46 million people across the province. Current Situation

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), floods in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers have impacted nearly 1,700 villages. Despite challenging conditions, relief efforts are underway, with over 265,000 people safely evacuated. Medical camps and veterinary facilities have also been established to assist families and safeguard livestock.

  • Chenab River: Rising water levels are being closely monitored. Over 991 villages have been affected, with large-scale relocation already completed.

  • Ravi River: Around 80 villages in districts like Narowal and Sheikhupura are under water, with thousands relocated to safer areas.

Scale of Relief Operations

The government has shifted over 90,000 cattle and established veterinary camps to prevent animal losses. Relief items, including tents, food, and medicines, are being distributed. Officials have assured that compensation will be provided for livestock losses, while stressing that illegal structures in high-risk zones will not be eligible for relief payments.

Infrastructure and Travel Updates

Flooding has temporarily disrupted flight operations at Sialkot International Airport, although the runway and terminal remain safe. Normal services are expected to resume after drainage work is completed.NGO seeks support for Borno flood victims

Leadership and International Support

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif conducted aerial visits of affected regions to review rescue and relief work. CM Maryam highlighted the effectiveness of the province’s early warning system, which helped ensure timely evacuations.

In addition, Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reached out to express solidarity and offered assistance in ongoing relief efforts, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations.
