Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He is expected to deliver a key address on Friday, where he will present Pakistan’s stance on various global and regional issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir conflict and the situation in Palestine.

His speech will highlight Pakistan’s support for multilateralism and its commitment to promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development in partnership with the United Nations.

Enhanced security measures are in place around the UN complex for the high-level sessions from September 24 to 28.

Prime Minister Shehbaz will also engage in several significant meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, including a high-level discussion on the threat posed by rising sea levels, the ‘SDG Moment 2024’, and the UN Security Council’s debate on leadership for global peace. He will also hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and meet with members of the US-Pakistan Business Council to promote Pakistan’s business-friendly policies and investment opportunities.

During his visit, the prime minister will emphasize the impacts of climate change, Pakistan’s efforts in combating terrorism, and the challenges faced by debt-laden countries. He will also draw attention to the Kashmir dispute and express concern over the situation in Palestine.

In addition, PM Shehbaz will meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, key leaders of international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as philanthropist Bill Gates. He is also scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss strategies to urge the international community to address the ongoing conflict in Palestine.

The prime minister’s visit includes attending a reception hosted by the Sultan of Brunei to celebrate 40 years of Brunei’s UN membership and a dinner reception by Dr. Muhammad Yunus marking Bangladesh’s 50th year in the UN.

The delegation accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz includes several high-ranking officials, such as Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.
