The European Union (EU) has announced an additional €700,000 in humanitarian aid to Pakistan following severe flooding and landslides that have caused significant loss of life and widespread damage to livelihoods and infrastructure.
This funding is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable communities in the hardest-hit regions, including Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.
In a press release, Taheeni Thammannagoda, who oversees the EU’s humanitarian programs in Pakistan, expressed condolences for the loss of life due to the heavy monsoon rains.
“The EU extends its heartfelt condolences to Pakistan for the lives lost during these exceptionally heavy monsoon rains, which have severely impacted the resilience of communities across the country.
We have provided funding to assist our humanitarian partners on the ground in delivering essential life-saving aid to affected families,” Thammannagoda said.
The emergency funding will be distributed through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The focus of the aid will be on providing critical assistance, such as water and sanitation, temporary shelters, and essential relief items to those most affected by the disaster.
This new aid is in addition to the €11 million that the EU has allocated for humanitarian support and disaster preparedness in Pakistan in 2024, further strengthening ongoing efforts to help communities in need.
