Karachi terror attack killing 2 Chinese nationals to not go unpunished: FO

Karachi Explosion: Officials Pledge Action After Tragic Incident Near Airport

The Foreign Office (FO) on Monday expressed strong condemnation of the previous night’s explosion near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, which claimed the lives of two Chinese nationals and injured several others, including one more Chinese citizen.

Late Sunday night, a powerful blast shook the city, heard from distant areas like Clifton, killing three individuals and injuring at least 11 others. The incident’s cause remains uncertain, with conflicting reports suggesting either an improvised explosive device (IED) or a collision between a vehicle and an oil tanker. Several vehicles were set ablaze in the aftermath of the explosion, with rescue workers managing to bring the fire under control.

The Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) Majeed Brigade, a banned organization, took responsibility for the attack in a statement released shortly afterward.

The FO condemned the act, stating that the authorities would ensure those responsible face justice. The FO further offered condolences to the victims’ families and affirmed that the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan remains a priority. It emphasized the enduring partnership between Pakistan and China and pledged to uphold the safety of Chinese citizens, projects, and institutions within the country.

The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan also condemned the incident, calling for a thorough investigation. The embassy urged Chinese nationals and enterprises in Pakistan to remain vigilant and take necessary safety measures.

Following the explosion, the Sindh Chief Minister convened a meeting with law enforcement agencies to review security in Karachi, emphasizing the importance of strengthening intelligence and coordination among agencies. A joint committee was formed to investigate the incident.

Leaders across Pakistan expressed their sympathies and condemned the attack. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the attack a “heinous act” and affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its Chinese friends. Other officials, including the Interior Minister and provincial leaders, also offered their condolences and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.

Flights from Karachi airport continued as normal, and authorities have reopened affected roads after securing the area.

This tragic incident has highlighted the ongoing need for enhanced security and collaboration to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of all citizens and foreign nationals within Pakistan.
