PMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert Across Pakistan as Monsoon Intensifies
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh weather alert forecasting heavy monsoon rains across several regions of the country over the next two days. The alert covers Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), northeast Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and parts of Balochistan, where strong winds, thunderstorms, and flash floods are likely.
Monsoon Season Brings Relief and Risk
Running from June to September, Pakistan’s monsoon season is vital for agriculture and water supply, but often comes with destructive weather patterns. Torrential rains can lead to flash floods, landslides, and displacement, especially in vulnerable or low-lying areas.
The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has also issued a nationwide alert, warning of potential flood-like conditions and urging preparedness, particularly in river catchment zones. So far, at least 19 people have lost their lives due to extreme weather incidents in Balochistan, KP, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.
Regions on Alert for Heavy Rainfall (July 8–10)
According to PMD’s forecast, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to persist until July 10, especially in upper and northeastern regions of the country.
-
Punjab, KP, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad will experience rain-wind/thundershowers.
-
Isolated heavy downpours are likely in Kashmir, northeast Punjab, Potohar region, and southern and northeastern Balochistan.
The PMD has urged citizens to remain cautious and stay updated through official weather channels.

Low-lying areas in the following cities are at risk of flooding due to continuous rainfall:
-
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Nowshera.
