Crackdown on Multiple Single Meters Begins

Govt to Crack Down on Multiple Electricity Meters in Households: Deadline Set for Power Companies

ISLAMABAD – In a move aimed at curbing misuse of electricity subsidies, the federal government has initiated a formal crackdown on the installation of multiple single-phase electricity meters by individual users.

The Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) has issued an official notification to all regional electricity distribution companies, including LESCO, directing them to submit comprehensive meter data by July 14.

Why This Action Is Being Taken

According to the notification, the government is investigating cases where multiple meters are installed at the same premises to unfairly benefit from the “protected consumer” category—a classification designed to offer subsidized electricity rates to low-consumption households.

This audit will include customer details, number of meters installed, and other relevant records from all power distribution companies across the country.

What Happens Next

Once data is collected, the government will assess whether the protected category is being misused and will take corrective steps. Under NEPRA regulations, only one meter per household qualifies for protected status.

Consumers found violating these rules may face:

  • Disqualification from subsidized electricity rates

  • Fines or penalties as per NEPRA laws

  • Possible disconnection of additional unauthorized meters

Key Points for Consumers

  • Deadline for data submission by DISCOs: July 14, 2025

  • One protected meter allowed per household

  • Extra meters not compliant with NEPRA standards may result in penalties

  • Households are urged to verify their electricity connections to avoid action

Conclusion

This initiative reflects the government’s broader effort to ensure fairness and transparency in the energy sector, particularly when it comes to subsidy distribution. By identifying and eliminating misuse, the authorities aim to better allocate resources to deserving households.
