FIBA EuroBasket 2025 to Generate Over €17 Million for Cyprus Economy

Limassol, Cyprus – The upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2025 games in Limassol are expected to give a huge boost to the Cypriot economy, with estimates showing the event could generate more than €17 million in financial benefits.

According to Mark Klirides, President of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Organizing Committee, hosting the tournament’s third group stage from August 24 to September 4 will deliver returns far greater than the costs.

“When we bid for the tournament back in 2021, we commissioned Ernst & Young to study the economic impact. The findings were clear – the benefits to Cyprus would be many times higher than the investment,” Klirides told Economy Today.

An updated report in November 2024 projected the total cost at €7.1 million, with direct and indirect benefits estimated at €12.2 million in the low scenario and €17.7 million in the high scenario.

Tourism and Hospitality to Reap Big Rewards

Much of the economic impact will come from tourism, hotels, restaurants, transportation, and local services, expected to generate over €12 million. Klirides also highlighted the long-term advantages, noting that global exposure from TV broadcasts and social media coverage will enhance Cyprus’s reputation as a top sports and tourism destination.

“Hosting a major sporting event like EuroBasket sends a strong message that Cyprus is open for investment and capable of delivering world-class events,” he said. “Sports tourism will benefit during the games and well into the future, while the experience gained by hundreds of local staff and volunteers will be invaluable.”

Promotions and Ticket Sales

Promotional campaigns are being run in partnership with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and the Municipality of Limassol, including hospitality packages, international expo appearances, and digital marketing content showcasing Cyprus.

Ticket prices range from €25 to €120, with some matches already sold out. Klirides said the aim was to allow the Cypriot basketball community to watch world-class players live at affordable rates.

Legacy for Cyprus Sports

The renovated Spyros Kyprianou Arena, now the largest and most modern indoor venue in the country, will serve as a lasting legacy. It will host national team games, All-Star matches, and major international competitions in the coming years.

“We believe basketball will grow significantly among young players after EuroBasket 2025,” Klirides added. “With strong government backing, Cyprus has shown it can host top-tier events — and the opportunities ahead are limitless.”
