JAKARTA, Indonesia — Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas, following a meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on Wednesday.
The two officials highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Both emphasized that a negotiated two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.
“The goal for all of us is clear: a two-state solution, which must be negotiated,” Wadephul stated.
Sugiono, Indonesia’s foreign minister, noted that their discussions also covered strategies to address geopolitical challenges and rising trade barriers, describing the meeting in Jakarta as “productive and constructive.”
Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has long supported Palestine and does not formally recognize Israel. Wadephul stressed Germany’s dual role, noting, “Germany, as a special friend and partner of Israel, also has a responsibility, and I believe we will have responsible discussions about this in the future.”
Germany maintains its support for Israel in its fight against Hamas while urging measures to reduce civilian suffering in Gaza, underscoring the importance of balancing security and humanitarian considerations.
