Isak signals Newcastle exit over ‘broken promises

Alexander Isak Breaks Silence on Newcastle Exit Talks Amid Liverpool Transfer Interest

Alexander Isak has finally spoken out on his future, admitting that leaving Newcastle United could be “in the best interests of everyone” as speculation grows around a potential move to Liverpool.

The Swedish striker, who finished as the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured in Newcastle’s pre-season fixtures or their opening match – a goalless draw against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Reports suggest Liverpool had a £110 million ($149m) bid turned down, with Newcastle valuing the 25-year-old at around £150 million – a figure that would set a new British transfer record.

On Tuesday, Isak took to Instagram after skipping the Professional Footballers’ Association awards ceremony, despite being named in the Premier League Team of the Year for 2024/25.

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence allowed people to shape their own versions of events,” he wrote. “The truth is promises were made, and the club has known my position for a long time. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s why change is in the best interests of everyone.”

It is believed that Newcastle had assured Isak of an improved contract, but financial sustainability concerns delayed the process. Since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022, Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including the decisive goal against Liverpool in the League Cup final that ended Newcastle’s 70-year trophy drought.

Liverpool, who lifted the Premier League title last season, have already spent nearly £300 million refreshing their squad. With Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez departing and the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, Jurgen Klopp’s side is actively searching for attacking reinforcements.

A transfer may not be finalized before Newcastle and Liverpool clash in their next Premier League encounter at St James’ Park on Monday, but all eyes remain on Isak’s future as the saga unfolds.
