Jessica Pegula Opens Up on the Challenges Beyond Competing in Tennis
Jessica Pegula, the 2024 US Open runner-up, says that professional tennis is far more demanding than simply stepping onto the court. The American star explained that players have to manage many aspects of their careers, including the possibility of setbacks under the spotlight of the entire world.
Pegula, who rose to prominence at the age of 28, has been among the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour since 2022. Before her breakthrough, she faced little external pressure, but as her achievements grew, so did the expectations. Now 31, Pegula is widely regarded as one of the top contenders at major tournaments.
Despite winning three titles in 2025, recent results have been challenging for the world No. 4, who has posted a 2-4 record since Wimbledon. That dip in form led to questions from critics ahead of this year’s US Open.
Speaking to Women’s Health magazine, Pegula shared insight into the off-court lessons that come with being a top player:
“You’re learning life lessons of how to manage people, manage yourself, manage your emotions. We are learning and failing in front of the world, especially if you’re a top player. It makes you so much stronger.”
To stay grounded, Pegula revealed that she follows a personal list of reminders:
-
Rethink your routine
-
Keep yourself honest
-
Know when to take a break
-
Take it point by point
On the importance of rest, the nine-time WTA champion added:
“Even though I’m not playing well, maybe not practicing is better than trying to push through it.”
While her recent form has been below expectations, the reduced pressure could allow Pegula to relax and focus on her best tennis. At last year’s US Open, she reached her first Grand Slam final, ultimately finishing as runner-up to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
