Karachi’s Water Crisis Intensifies After Fault at Major Water Pumping Station

Karachi Faces Major Water Shortage After Power Breakdown at Dhabeji Pumping Station

Karachi is bracing for a critical water shortage of nearly 100 million gallons after a major power outage disrupted operations at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, according to a spokesperson from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB).

⚡ What Happened?

The breakdown occurred shortly after 12:20 AM on Tuesday when a K-Electric power failure hit the pumping station. The outage affected Line No. 5 of the city’s primary water supply system at two key locations, forcing a suspension of water pumping operations.

This disruption has significantly impacted the water supply to various parts of the city, sparking concerns among residents already grappling with high temperatures and limited resources.

🛠️ Repairs Underway

The KW&SB has launched emergency repair work, with officials estimating that full restoration may take up to 36 hours. During this period, many neighborhoods across Karachi will continue to face intermittent or no water supply.

📍 Areas Likely to Be Affected

Communities expected to experience disruptions include:

  • Nazimabad

  • New Karachi

  • Landhi

  • Korangi

  • And surrounding localities

These areas were also impacted during a similar outage last month, when a 38-hour power failure halted operations at the K-II and K-III pump houses, resulting in a 171 million gallon water shortfall.

With Karachi’s water infrastructure already under pressure, these repeated outages highlight the urgent need for more reliable power supply to critical utilities and long-term upgrades to the city’s water system.

✅ What Residents Can Do

Residents are advised to:

  • Conserve water wherever possible

  • Stay updated via KW&SB and local news channels

  • Report leaks or illegal connections to avoid further wastage

Authorities continue to work around the clock to restore operations and minimize disruption for the city’s millions of residents.
