Lahore Zoo to Welcome 12 Giraffes from South Africa in Major Expansion Effort
LAHORE – In an exciting development for animal lovers, Lahore Zoo is preparing to welcome a group of 12 giraffes from South Africa, marking a significant addition to its wildlife collection. The move is part of a broader initiative to enhance animal diversity and visitor experience at the zoo.
According to Zoo Director Mudassar Hassan, final arrangements are being made with an airline to transport the giraffes directly to Pakistan, ensuring their safety and comfort during the journey.
🦒 Quarantine and Distribution
Upon arrival, the giraffes will undergo a strict quarantine period of 15 to 30 days, during which they will be closely monitored by veterinary experts to ensure their health and well-being. Of the 12 giraffes, nine will be sent to the Safari Zoo, while three will become part of the Lahore Zoo.
🟢 Government Support and Funding
The Punjab government has allocated Rs. 135 million for this high-profile initiative, highlighting its commitment to improving zoo infrastructure and expanding animal diversity.
This is not the first time Lahore Zoo has welcomed giraffes from South Africa. A similar effort took place in 2018, when three giraffes were successfully imported to enhance the zoo’s appeal.
🐘 More Additions on the Way
Director Hassan also revealed that the zoo authorities are working on acquiring other large animals, including elephants, to further enrich the Safari Zoo’s wildlife offerings.
This move is expected to attract more visitors, boost educational opportunities for children, and support wildlife conservation awareness in Pakistan.
