Premier League Boss Gives Update on Manchester City Financial Charges Case

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has said his personal frustration over the delay in a verdict on Manchester City’s financial charges is “irrelevant” as the matter rests entirely with an independent commission.

City were hit with over 100 charges in February 2023, including alleged breaches of the league’s financial regulations and failure to fully cooperate with the investigation. The case was heard between September and December 2024, but no decision has yet been announced.

Speaking to Sky Sports News ahead of the 2025/26 season, Masters explained that the Premier League has no influence over the timing of the verdict.

“Once charges are brought, they go before an independently selected panel. They control the process and its timings. We just have to wait — and my frustration is irrelevant,” Masters said. “Legal processes often take longer than expected, but we must be patient.”

Manchester City, who deny all wrongdoing, insist they have a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” to clear their name. If found guilty, the club could face severe penalties, including a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League.

The charges cover a range of alleged offences, including:

  • Failing to report accurate financial information from 2009/10 to 2017/18.

  • Not fully disclosing former manager Roberto Mancini’s pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13.

  • Failing to provide complete details of player remuneration between 2010/11 and 2015/16.

  • Not cooperating with the investigation from 2018 to 2023.

Since the Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City have transformed from mid-table finishers into the dominant force in English football, winning eight Premier League titles since 2012 and their first-ever Champions League in 2023.

The football world now waits for the independent panel’s decision — a ruling that could have historic consequences for the Premier League.
