Khawaja Nafay Credits Sir Vivian Richards for Boosting His Self-Belief and Batting Confidence

LAHORE: Emerging Pakistan batter Khawaja Nafay has credited West Indies cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards for instilling in him the confidence and mindset needed to succeed at the highest level. Currently part of the PCB’s Skills Development Camp (Phase 2), Nafay shared how his interactions with Sir Viv during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) profoundly impacted his game.

“Sir Vivian Richards told me that if I play with self-belief, nothing will ever seem difficult,” said Nafay. “Even when he played the toughest shots, he always trusted himself completely.”

Learning from a Legend

While playing for Quetta Gladiators, Nafay had the rare opportunity to interact closely with Sir Vivian Richards, who serves as the team’s mentor. The 23-year-old batter recalled watching footage of Richards’ fearless batting style with teammates and then discussing his mindset in person.

“We used to watch his old matches and then ask him how he stayed so calm under pressure,” Nafay explained. “He told us it all came down to self-belief—that’s what made the biggest difference in his career.”

A Star on the Rise

Known for his aggressive stroke play and confidence at the crease, Khawaja Nafay has steadily made a name for himself in domestic and franchise cricket, catching the attention of selectors and fans alike. With Pakistan cricket evolving under the guidance of new coaching staff, including Mike Hesson, the door seems open for Nafay to step onto the international stage.

Pathway to the National Team

As Pakistan looks to build a team that reflects the demands of modern cricket—fast-paced, fearless, and innovative—players like Nafay are becoming increasingly valuable. His ability to apply key lessons from a legendary figure like Richards gives him a psychological edge.

“Learning from someone like Sir Vivian Richards has been a turning point,” said Nafay. “His message was simple: believe in your abilities, and everything else will follow.”

The Future Ahead

With Pakistan preparing for a new era of cricket and actively grooming young talent, Khawaja Nafay is poised to be a crucial part of that transition. As he continues to refine his skills and mentality, fueled by the wisdom of one of the sport’s all-time greats, his rise in the national setup appears inevitable.
