Shakur Stevenson Close to Fighting Teofimo Lopez in January
Shakur Stevenson is moving forward with plans to elevate his legacy, as he is reportedly very receptive to a January showdown with WBO 140lbs champion Teofimo Lopez.
A source close to Stevenson told BoxingScene that the undefeated three-division champion, 24-0 (11 KOs), has verbally agreed to terms for the fight. The January date was proposed by Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh. While Lopez has expressed mutual interest on social media, Stevenson and his team are cautious after previously withdrawing from a November bout with two-division champion Devin Haney.
What’s at Stake
The fight would give Stevenson the chance to become a four-division world champion, following his impressive win over mandatory WBC lightweight contender William Zepeda on July 25 in New York. Lopez, 22-1 (13 KOs), last fought on May 2, defeating Arnold Barboza Jr. by unanimous decision in Times Square.
Social Media and Rankings
Both elite American fighters have been trading challenges online, with the bout likely affecting their positions in the top-10 pound-for-pound rankings. Stevenson has used social media to prompt Lopez to publicly commit, signaling his readiness for the clash.
WBO Developments
Earlier this week, the WBO acted to keep Lopez active by considering a petition from Keyshawn Davis to become the top-ranked challenger. If Davis defeats current top contender Alfredo Santiago, he could challenge Lopez for the title. Stevenson has indicated that his plan is to beat Lopez and then allow Davis, his friend and fellow U.S. Olympic silver medalist, to inherit the 140lbs belt.
This potential matchup between two elite American champions is shaping up as one of the most anticipated fights of early 2026, with both fighters seeking to cement their legacies in boxing history.
