Twelve Soldiers Martyred, 13 Militants Killed in South Waziristan Operation
South Waziristan, Sept 13 – Pakistan’s security forces and militants clashed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s South Waziristan district, resulting in the martyrdom of 12 soldiers and the killing of 13 militants, the military’s media wing reported on Saturday.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the incident occurred during an intense exchange of fire. Security forces fought gallantly, but 12 personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty.
Counter-Terrorism Operations Continue
The ISPR stated that the operation in South Waziristan was part of broader counter-terrorism efforts between September 10 and 13, during which 35 militants were eliminated in multiple engagements across different districts.
In another intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Bajaur, 22 militants were killed following heavy gunfire. Weapons and ammunition were recovered, and the suspects were said to have been involved in terrorist activities in the region.
Concerns Over Cross-Border Involvement
The military highlighted intelligence findings suggesting the involvement of foreign elements, including the use of Afghan soil for militant activity. Pakistan has repeatedly called on the interim Afghan government to ensure that its territory is not used against Pakistan.
Recent Surge in Attacks
Pakistan has faced a rise in militant incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan in recent months. Earlier this month, six soldiers were martyred when security forces repelled an attack on the Federal Constabulary headquarters in Bannu.
Between September 9 and 10, separate operations in Mohmand, North Waziristan, and Bannu led to the elimination of 19 militants, while in Balochistan’s Mastung district, security forces neutralized four more suspects.
Last month, security forces also foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, killing 50 militants in a four-day-long operation.
Determination Against Terrorism
The ISPR reiterated that Pakistan’s security forces remain fully committed to eliminating terrorism. “The sacrifices of our brave soldiers only strengthen our resolve to ensure lasting peace and stability in the country,” the statement said.
