5G is Coming Soon and Satellite Internet Will Follow: PTA

PTA Chairman Stresses Cybersecurity, Privacy, and 5G Launch Plans

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman, has highlighted the importance of adopting emerging technologies while ensuring strong cybersecurity and public trust.

Speaking at a cybersecurity workshop and awards ceremony, the PTA chief confirmed that the authority is working towards the rollout of 5G services in Pakistan, while also noting that China has already begun discussions on 6G technology. He stressed that cybersecurity is a key requirement for 5G implementation.

“Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, but it is also being misused to create fake audio and video content. Preventing financial fraud is a challenge, and PTA is actively addressing it,” he said.

The chairman also revealed that rules for the Pakistan Satellite Internet Regulatory Body (PSARB) are ready, paving the way for the launch of satellite internet services in the country. He underscored the importance of data protection, safe internet usage, and safeguarding citizens’ privacy.

“We must assure the nation that we are the protectors of your privacy and data,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, PTA Director General Cyber Vigilance, Dr. Mukaram Khan, shared that Pakistan has successfully defended against cyber warfare attempts from India. He confirmed there have been no major cyberattacks on the telecom sector, and that the country’s cybersecurity standards have improved to a score of 8.8 out of 10 in telecom.

PTA also conducts third-party cybersecurity audits for all telecom operators and is working on addressing any vulnerabilities.
