Audit Report Raises Questions Over PCB Chairman’s Expenses
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing increased scrutiny following revelations from a recent audit that highlighted significant expenditures made on behalf of its current chairman, Mohsin Naqvi. The findings come at a time when the board is already under pressure to improve transparency and financial accountability.
According to sources cited by local media, the audit report indicates that the PCB allocated PKR 4.17 million for various allowances and benefits extended to Chairman Mohsin Naqvi between February and June 2024. These included utility bills, hotel accommodations, and vehicle-related expenses.
Notably, Mr. Naqvi currently holds the position of Federal Interior Minister, a role that already entitles him to official state-sponsored benefits under the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) Act, 1975.
📋 Audit Findings at a Glance:
-
Utility bills for a private residence in Lahore: PKR 2.4 million
-
Fuel expenses for an official vehicle: PKR 563,000
-
Hotel stays in Islamabad: PKR 1.16 million
The Auditor General of Pakistan noted that these payments overlap with the entitlements Mr. Naqvi already receives as a federal minister. The report raised concerns about potential “dual benefits” and emphasized the need for greater financial oversight.
However, the PCB has defended its position, stating that its internal policies do not restrict such expenditures for individuals holding dual roles. The board referenced precedents set by previous chairmen to justify the payments, maintaining that all transactions were made transparently and in good faith.
Despite this, the audit team has called for further clarification and has recommended reimbursement of the hotel expense, describing the justification as “not aligned with financial guidelines.”
🏏 Why It Matters
These developments come at a time when Pakistan cricket is undergoing significant reforms, with growing calls from fans and experts for greater governance, accountability, and financial transparency. The PCB’s budgeting practices, especially concerning senior officials, are likely to remain in the spotlight in the coming weeks.
With public interest in the matter increasing, it remains to be seen whether the PCB will review its policies or maintain the current course as part of its ongoing administrative strategy.
