Sindh Wants to Improve Education Quality for Children Using Field Based Research

AKU Hosts Landmark Policy Roundtable to Drive Education Reforms in Sindh

Karachi – The Aga Khan University (AKU) recently hosted a high-level policy roundtable focused on embedding field-based research into education policy reforms in Sindh. The initiative aims to improve learning outcomes, especially for children in marginalized communities, by encouraging data-driven decision-making.

The event was part of the Data and Research in Education – Research Consortium (DARE-RC), a pioneering program funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The consortium brings together top educationists, researchers, and policymakers to align rigorous research with Sindh’s education priorities.

Evidence-Based Research to Guide Education Policy

Key discussions centered on:

  • Equitable Access and Inclusion

  • Strengthening Frontline Education Provision

  • Building Climate-Resilient Education Systems

  • Governance and Effective Data Use

These themes are expected to shape Sindh’s upcoming education sector plan, ensuring that research-backed insights are translated into impactful policy reforms.

Leading Voices Emphasize Research-Driven Transformation

Dr. Farid Panjwani, Dean at AKU Institute for Educational Development, stressed the importance of grounding policies in field research.

“All 18 studies in Sindh under DARE-RC are based on real-world data, not top-down assumptions. This is key to improving learning outcomes across the board.”

Dr. Ehtasham Anwar, Team Lead for DARE-RC, noted:

“This is Pakistan’s first and largest initiative that embeds research into education policymaking—ensuring systemic transformation.”

Richard Yates, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission, added:

“Education is crucial for individual and national development, and the UK is proud to support this initiative.”

A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Change

The event was jointly organized by Oxford Policy Management (OPM), AKU IED-PK, and Sightsavers, signaling a strong commitment to collaboration between research institutions, government, and international partners.
