Drap Orders Immediate Recall of Anarob Antibiotic Drip Over Contamination Concerns
The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) has issued an urgent recall of a batch of Anarob Infusion, an intravenous antibiotic drip, after tests revealed dangerous levels of bacterial toxins.
Anarob Infusion contains metronidazole, commonly used in hospitals to treat serious infections in the stomach, lungs, skin, joints, and other parts of the body when oral antibiotics are ineffective.
According to Drap, the affected batch (H24219) was found “substandard” by the Central Drugs Laboratory, exceeding safe limits for bacterial endotoxins. The contaminated infusion could lead to fever, chills, septic shock, and life-threatening complications, especially in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients.
The authority has directed:
-
Pharmacists and chemists to immediately quarantine and return remaining stocks
-
Provincial Drug Control departments to conduct market surveys and remove the affected batch
-
Healthcare facilities to remain vigilant and report any adverse reactions
Consumers are urged not to use Anarob Infusion from the affected batch and to contact their physician if they experience any health issues. Any incidents should also be reported to Drap or the National Pharmacovigilance Centre (NPC).
Drap has a history of recalling contaminated medical products, including syrups for children, emphasizing the importance of monitoring drug quality across Pakistan.
