Flying Fijians Open Pacific Nations Cup with Convincing Win Over Tonga
Fiji began their Pacific Nations Cup campaign with a strong 32-10 victory over Tonga at Suva, showcasing their attacking prowess despite some handling errors.
The hosts controlled much of the game, stretching Tonga’s defence and scoring four impressive tries. Tonga started strongly, with scrum-half Augustine Pulu scoring early, but Fiji quickly responded and dominated the remainder of the match.
Captain Tevita Ikanivere, who scored one of Fiji’s tries, acknowledged the slow start but praised his team’s resilience. “We are a bit disappointed with our start, but thankful for the boys coming back with great spirit and getting the win,” he said.
Fiji’s scoring highlights included a 95-meter dash try from Seta Tamanivalu and another try from Kalaveti Ravouvou, showcasing fast ball movement, width, and pace. Caleb Muntz contributed with key penalties, while Ikanivere and Taniela Rakuro added to the score in the second half.
Tonga struggled with discipline, allowing Fiji to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Salesi Piutau noted, “Discipline kept us in our own half, and against a team like Fiji, they made the most of those chances.”
Despite the loss, Tonga coach Nili Latu remained optimistic about the team’s future. “Our mission is to qualify for the Rugby World Cup. We’re on the right track. We’ll regroup and go again,” he said.
Fiji’s victory sets a strong tone for their title defense in this year’s Pacific Nations Cup, demonstrating why they are among the tournament favorites.
