Azerbaijan Officially Inducts Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder Fighter Jets
Nov 12, 2025
In a major boost to Pakistan’s defense exports, Azerbaijan has officially inducted the JF-17 Thunder fighter jets into its air force, marking a proud moment for Pakistan’s aviation industry and military collaboration with friendly nations.
The announcement was confirmed by the Office of the President of Azerbaijan, which revealed that the country’s air force has added the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC) co-produced JF-17 Thunder to its combat fleet.
JF-17 Thunder Takes Flight in Azerbaijan
During the Victory Day parade on November 8, four single-seat and one twin-seat JF-17 aircraft soared over Baku, showcasing the new addition to Azerbaijan’s air defense arsenal.
Observers noted that the lead twin-seat aircraft carried Colonel Novruz Tahirov of the Azerbaijan Air Force and Air Defence Force as the backseat occupant — a detail confirmed by uniform patches seen during the flight. Interestingly, the aircraft featured no visible national markings, suggesting the jets are newly delivered and awaiting official insignia.
Pakistan’s Largest Defense Export Deal
Earlier in 2025, Pakistan finalized a $4.6 billion defense deal with Azerbaijan for the sale of 40 JF-17 Thunder jets, expanding on an initial order of 16 aircraft. This agreement stands as Pakistan’s biggest-ever defense export, highlighting the growing global confidence in its homegrown aerospace technology.
The JF-17 Thunder, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, is a fourth-generation multi-role combat aircraft known for its agility, affordability, and advanced avionics, making it a preferred choice for several developing nations.
Strengthening Regional Defense Cooperation
Experts believe Azerbaijan’s acquisition of the JF-17 Thunder will significantly enhance its air combat capabilities and could shift the regional balance of power in the South Caucasus, particularly in its ongoing rivalry with Armenia.
The induction also reflects Pakistan’s growing role as a reliable defense exporter, with the JF-17 program gaining momentum in the global arms market. Countries such as Nigeria and Myanmar have already added the jet to their fleets, further strengthening its international reputation.
This latest induction by Azerbaijan is yet another testament to Pakistan’s defense innovation, positioning the JF-17 Thunder as one of the most successful and cost-effective fighter jets in its class.
