Callum Walsh Set for Major Spotlight on Canelo vs. Crawford Undercard
Rising junior middleweight contender Callum Walsh is poised to take a huge step forward in his career with a high-profile co-feature fight on September 13. Walsh, a popular southpaw from Cork, Ireland, will face second-generation fighter Fernando Vargas Jr. in a 10-round bout ahead of the highly anticipated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Terence “Bud” Crawford superfight.
Walsh, 24, trains in Hollywood under Hall of Fame cornerman Freddie Roach and has quickly become a fan favorite on the UFC Fight Pass series “Hollywood Fight Night.” With an undefeated record of 14-0, including 11 knockouts, Walsh is eager to keep his streak alive and prove himself on the big stage.
“It’s showtime. 15-0,” Walsh confidently declared ahead of the fight.
His opponent, Fernando Vargas Jr., is also undefeated at 17-0 with 15 knockouts. The California native is the eldest of three fighting brothers, all making names for themselves in the sport. Known for handling every challenge so far, Vargas Jr. aims to silence any doubters with a strong performance.
“In five weeks, I make the doubters believers,” said Vargas Jr.
The event will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, marking the first-ever boxing event at the home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. The entire card, including Walsh-Vargas and other exciting matchups, will stream live on Netflix.
Additional highlights include a super middleweight bout between unbeaten WBC interim titlist Christian Mbilli and contender Lester Martinez, as well as rising lightweight prospect Mohammed Alakel making his U.S. debut.
