CDA Announces Major Update Regarding Islamabad-Rawalpindi Train Project

Islamabad–Rawalpindi to Get First Eco-Friendly Rail Service

The twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are set to be connected through a modern, eco-friendly electric rail service. This project will introduce the region’s first EV commuter train, designed to provide affordable and sustainable transport options.

Key Developments

A high-level meeting on the rail car service was recently held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

During the meeting, it was confirmed that the CDA and Pakistan Railways will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally launch the project.

Project Highlights

  • Eco-Friendly Technology: The train will operate as an electric vehicle (EV), contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

  • Ridership Survey: A detailed study has been carried out to evaluate commuter demand and ensure smooth operations.

  • Carbon Credits: The project will be aligned with international standards, including compliance with carbon credit mechanisms.

  • Extended Network: Future plans include expanding the service to other parts of Islamabad using existing railway infrastructure.

Connectivity and Feeder Buses

To ensure convenience, electric feeder buses will connect different parts of the city to Margalla Railway Station, making transfers seamless for passengers.

Benefits for Citizens

According to officials, the new service will:

  • Help reduce traffic congestion in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

  • Provide safe, comfortable, and affordable travel.

  • Modernize the public transport system in line with global best practices.

The meeting was attended by CDA Board Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, along with senior officials from both Pakistan Railways and the CDA.

Once operational, the Islamabad–Rawalpindi rail link will be a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable urban transportation.
