Dubai Schools Welcome New KHDA Teacher Appointment and Deregistration Rules
DUBAI, Sept 12 – Private schools across Dubai have welcomed the new teacher appointment and deregistration framework introduced by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), calling it a vital step toward strengthening standards for teachers, students, and schools.
90-Day Resignation Notice Praised
One of the most popular measures is the 90-day notice period for teachers resigning mid-term. School leaders say the rule will reduce classroom disruptions, give schools time to arrange replacements, and help teachers manage career changes responsibly.
Luydmyla Klykova, Principal of Hampton Heights International School, said the policy creates stability in the system by ensuring smooth transitions.
Punit MK Vasu, CEO of The Indian High Group of Schools, added that the rule also reassures parents: “Students have often been affected by sudden teacher departures. This framework ensures continuity and fairness for all.”
Raising Standards and Integrity
The KHDA has also introduced minimum qualifications and codes of conduct for teachers, including those teaching Arabic and Islamic Studies. Current educators have until 2028 (or April 2029 for schools on the April cycle) to meet the requirements.
Vasu said the framework raises the bar by setting clear grounds for deregistration in cases of misconduct, keeping classrooms safe and ethical.
Focus on Teacher Support and Student Growth
Shorouk Al Redha, Chief People Officer at Aldar Education, highlighted that the rules show KHDA’s commitment to professional development, safeguarding, and inclusion, helping schools retain teachers and improve learning outcomes.
Deepa Balasubramanian, Group Head of People & Culture at LEAMS Education, said the system strikes the right balance:
-
For students: uninterrupted learning through the 90-day rule.
-
For teachers: induction training, mentorship, and clear career pathways.
-
For schools: accountability via standardised checks and exit surveys.
Accountability Through Deregistration
The Staff Deregistration Technical Guide outlines procedures for removing educators found guilty of serious violations. Dr. Jinto Sebastian, Principal of The Apple International School, said this ensures safe learning environments and transparent accountability.
A Sector-Wide Effort
Education providers such as GEMS Education confirmed they are reviewing the new framework and will fully align with KHDA requirements.
School leaders agreed the initiative is future-focused, ensuring student welfare, teacher development, and institutional accountability — creating a more stable and ethical private education sector in Dubai.
