Errani and Vavassori Defend US Open Mixed Doubles Title
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori successfully defended their US Open mixed doubles crown on Wednesday, defeating Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in a thrilling final under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Italian duo sealed a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 victory, securing the $1 million top prize in the revamped 16-team competition.
The new format, which brought several top singles stars into the mixed doubles field, saw packed crowds from the very start. Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, partnered with Ruud just days after winning the Cincinnati Open, while Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, and Novak Djokovic also took part before early exits.
Despite the star-studded draw, the Italians’ experience and chemistry proved decisive. Their partnership, which also delivered a French Open title this year, allowed them to stay composed in pressure moments. After dropping the second set, they stormed to a 4-0 lead in the deciding match tiebreak and never looked back.
Errani dedicated the victory to doubles specialists who were left out of the new format:
“This one is also for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament,” she said.
Swiatek praised the champions for their tactical edge, joking that doubles players might be “smarter” on court.
The atmosphere on Arthur Ashe was electric throughout, with both Errani and Vavassori describing the night as unforgettable.
“It’s the court where I feel goosebumps every time,” Errani said.
Vavassori added: “We showed today that doubles is a great product.”
With their triumph, Errani and Vavassori not only proved their class but also gave mixed doubles its moment in the spotlight at the season’s final Grand Slam.
