Suarez, Woo Power Mariners Past White Sox in Series Opener
August 6
SEATTLE – Eugenio Suarez broke a tie with a clutch home run, his first since being re-acquired at the trade deadline, lifting the Seattle Mariners to an 8-3 win over the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park.
Right-hander Bryan Woo (9-6) delivered a dominant performance, allowing just one run on two hits across seven innings while striking out nine – matching a career high. The Mariners are now 4-1 on their current 10-game homestand.
Dominic Canzone and Josh Naylor also homered for Seattle, while Jorge Polanco added a two-run single to help seal the win.
Game Highlights
The White Sox opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run from Lenyn Sosa, who launched one off the roof of the Mariners’ bullpen in left-center field. Kyle Teel followed with a double in the second – the only other hit Woo would allow – before the Seattle righty retired 16 consecutive batters.
Canzone responded in the bottom of the second with a 405-foot solo blast to right-center, tying the game 1-1.
In the fourth inning, Seattle pulled ahead. After Naylor reached on an error, Suarez launched a first-pitch cutter into Edgar’s Cantina for his 37th home run of the season, tying him for fourth-most in MLB this year.
The Mariners added three more runs in the sixth. After a pair of walks and a double steal, Polanco delivered a two-RBI single, ending starter Davis Martin’s (3-9) night. The inning concluded with another run scoring on a groundout by rookie Cole Young.
Naylor extended the lead to 8-1 in the seventh with a two-run homer to right following a single by Julio Rodriguez.
The White Sox managed two solo homers in the ninth from Luis Robert Jr. and Colson Montgomery, both off Jackson Kowar, to complete the scoring.
Despite the loss, the White Sox have still won 10 of their last 16 games. Game two of the series continues Wednesday in Seattle.
