Four Rare Bryde’s Whales Spotted Off Gwadar Coast
October 25, 2025

In a remarkable development for marine conservation, four rare Bryde’s whales have been spotted off the coast of Gwadar, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature–Pakistan (WWF-P). The whales were seen near Demi Zur, approximately five kilometers north of the local fishermen’s operating area.

The sighting was first reported by a fishing crew led by Captain Amir Dad Karim, who noticed movement in the calm waters and identified the creatures as Bryde’s whales. The whales were observed moving toward coastal waters, likely in search of food.

The Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera brydei) is one of only three baleen whale species known to inhabit Pakistani waters, alongside the blue whale and Arabian humpback whale. These whales prefer warm and temperate seas and primarily feed on small fish such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerels, which are abundant along Pakistan’s coastline.

According to WWF-P, the species is listed as “data deficient” on the IUCN Red List, meaning that more scientific research is needed to understand its global population. In Pakistan, Bryde’s whales are protected under national wildlife and fisheries laws due to their ecological importance.

The organization is also developing a national databank of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) through its citizen science program, which encourages fishermen and the public to report sightings. This initiative helps track marine biodiversity and supports ongoing conservation efforts in Pakistan’s coastal regions.

The sighting of these majestic creatures highlights the rich biodiversity of Pakistan’s marine ecosystem and the growing importance of protecting ocean life for future generations.
