Gujrat Flooding Enters Sixth Day Despite CM Maryam Nawaz’s Ultimatum
Several areas remain submerged; residents face health risks and heavy business losses
GUJRAT – Despite Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s 48-hour ultimatum to clear floodwater from Gujrat city, several major localities remained inundated on Monday — the sixth consecutive day of urban flooding.
While key commercial hubs such as Muslim Bazaar, Circular Road, GT Road, and adjoining markets have been cleared and businesses have resumed, many residential and hospital areas are still underwater.
Health Concerns on the Rise
Flood-hit neighborhoods are now reporting a surge in skin infections, throat ailments, and gastroenteritis, according to local health officials. Patients and attendants at private hospitals located on Jail Road and surrounding areas are among the worst affected.
Key Localities Still Submerged
Major roads and residential areas, including Jinnah Road, Jail Road, Rehman Shaheed Road, Ghareebpura, Khawajgan Road, Prince Chowk, Shah Hussain Shafiabad, Bara Dari, Jalalpur Jattan Road, and Zahoor Elahi Stadium Market, remained under floodwater throughout Monday.
Traders in these areas have reported heavy financial losses, with many shops closed for nearly a week due to stagnant water.
Breach of Dykes Sparks FIR
Authorities said some locals forcibly breached dykes near Malhu Khokhar and the DC embankment, diverting water back into the city. Police have registered a case at Daulat Nagar Police Station against 11 people, including a retired sub-inspector, for allegedly causing the breach.
Government Response
Punjab Minister for Local Bodies Mian Zeeshan Rafique, Gujranwala Commissioner Naveed Haider, Gujrat Deputy Commissioner Nurulain Qureshi, and District Police Officer Rana Umar Farooq visited the worst-hit areas on Monday.
A housing department spokesman said that efforts are being accelerated to clear floodwater and restore normalcy “within the next few hours.”
