Women’s Softball Coaches Share Goals and Strategies Ahead of The World Games 2025

With just one day left before the first pitch of The World Games Women’s Softball Tournament, head coaches from the eight participating nations have revealed their expectations, team strengths, and plans for success.

China (World No. 10) head coach Tang Changdong aims for a strong start in the Opening Round, targeting a top-four finish. He praised his squad’s resilience, calling them “fiercely competitive” and a reflection of modern women’s softball spirit.

Japan, ranked No. 1, enter as gold medal favorites. Coach Reika Utsugi, who led them to Olympic gold in 2020, highlighted the balance between experienced players and rising stars as their biggest advantage.

For USA (No. 2), new head coach Patty Gasso is focused on team chemistry. While aiming for gold, she emphasized the importance of learning and executing game plans. She credited veteran players for helping guide the squad during her short preparation period.

Canada (No. 4) are determined to improve on recent bronze medal finishes. Coach Kaleigh Rafter stressed the need to execute in crucial moments, knowing that every match in the tournament will be a challenge.

Netherlands (No. 6) coach Saskia Kosterink said the key to success is “doing the little things right” and starting strong against China in their opening game.

Puerto Rico (No. 3) are seeking their first senior podium finish at a global event. Coach David Santos believes his young, fearless squad can make a breakthrough if they win key group-stage matches.

Australia (No. 8) are using the tournament to rebuild after recent struggles. Coach Kerrie Porter sees this as vital preparation for future World Cups and the LA 2028 Olympics.

Chinese Taipei, bronze medalists in Birmingham 2022, aim to repeat their podium success. Coach Han Hsin-Lin described the team as young, fast, and powerful, with a focus on learning from global competition.

The tournament promises high-level competition between some of the best softball teams in the world, with every nation chasing the ultimate prize — a spot on the podium.
