Highlanders Sign Former All Black Angus Ta’avao for 2026 Super Rugby Season

The Highlanders have bolstered their forward pack with the signing of experienced prop Angus Ta’avao, a 23-cap former All Black and 2019 Rugby World Cup standout.

The 32-year-old will join the Dunedin-based franchise for the 2026 Super Rugby season, marking his fourth Super Rugby club after stints with the Blues, Waratahs, and Chiefs. Over his career, Ta’avao has amassed an impressive 144 Super Rugby appearances, bringing valuable experience to a youthful Highlanders squad.

Last season, the Highlanders’ scrum struggled in key moments, and head coach Jamie Joseph – who famously guided the team to their first-ever Super Rugby title – has been working to rebuild the side’s depth and power up front.

Alongside signing promising young talents such as Timoci Tavatavanawai, Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens, and Caleb Tangitau, Joseph has strengthened the forward pack with rising players like Veveni Lasaqa, TK Howden, and Soane Vikena. Now, Ta’avao’s arrival adds proven leadership and stability.

“Building depth across the park is critical for a successful campaign,” said Joseph. “Angus brings a wealth of experience, resilience, and character. He’s an ideal fit for our culture and ambitions.”

Ta’avao, who has also been working as a pundit for Sky Sports, expressed excitement about the move south.

“I’m excited to join the Highlanders in 2026,” he said. “I look forward to embracing the culture, adding my own style, and helping the team succeed.”

With Ta’avao on board, Highlanders fans will be hoping his presence can lift the forward pack’s performance and inspire a return to winning ways in the 2026 Super Rugby campaign.
