Is Mohammad Amir Planning a Comeback Before the T20 World Cup?

KARACHI: With the T20 World Cup 2026 just months away, speculation has once again surrounded Mohammad Amir, one of Pakistan’s most talented fast bowlers, over a potential comeback to international cricket.

Amir, 33, who announced his retirement from international cricket last year, continues to play actively in global franchise leagues, keeping fans hopeful that he might once again don the Pakistan jersey.

Rumors Spark After ILT20 Withdrawal

The comeback buzz intensified when Amir withdrew from the ILT20 auction, a move that many cricket observers interpreted as a signal of his readiness to rejoin the national team. Given Pakistan’s current struggles in the fast-bowling department, the timing of the decision added further fuel to the speculation.

Amir Clears the Air

However, Amir has now ended all rumors, confirming that his retirement is final. In a recent statement, the left-arm pacer said he has no plans to return to international cricket and urged fans and media to support the current generation of players.

“It’s their time now — the focus should be on the young bowlers representing Pakistan,” Amir said.

Pakistan’s Search for Consistency Continues

While Pakistan’s current pace attack features several promising names, few have managed to replicate the match-winning brilliance Amir displayed at his peak. The fast bowler’s ability to swing the ball both ways and deliver under pressure made him a key figure in Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy triumph.

Amir’s brief comeback for the 2024 T20 World Cup ended without major impact, reinforcing his decision to step aside permanently.

Final Word from Amir

When asked if there’s any chance of another U-turn, Amir’s response was clear: “No.”
Still, the veteran remains hopeful for Pakistan’s success on the world stage and says he will always be a supporter of the team.
