Japan’s Oka wins third gold on horizontal bar

Shinnosuke Oka Shines at Paris Olympics with Horizontal Bar Gold

PARIS: Shinnosuke Oka’s Olympic debut was nothing short of a fairytale as the Japanese gymnast secured gold on the horizontal bar, adding to his team and all-around titles. The 20-year-old, who also claimed a bronze in parallel bars, scored 14.533 points, matching Colombia’s Angel Barajas. However, Oka clinched gold thanks to his higher execution mark. China’s Zhang Boheng and Taiwan’s Tang Chia-Hung shared the bronze.

Oka, reflecting on his success, emphasized the significance of the team gold. “My favorite is, of course, the gold medal in the team final because that’s what we’ve been working so hard for. It’s a collective result,” he said. After helping Japan to the team title, Oka felt the pressure lift, allowing him to perform with greater ease.

Barajas celebrated a historic moment for Colombia, earning the country’s first-ever Olympic gymnastics medal. “To be a 17-year-old in the Olympics is a crazy experience, but it is more important to just enjoy it out there,” he shared.

The final witnessed several falls and errors, with Tang and Japan’s Takaaki Sugino suffering noticeable mishaps, drawing gasps from the crowd.

Viktor Axelsen Retains Olympic Badminton Title

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen successfully defended his Olympic badminton title, defeating Thailand’s world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the men’s singles final in Paris. Supported by a passionate Danish crowd at La Chapelle Arena, the second-seeded Axelsen triumphed over his eighth-seeded opponent 21-11, 21-11 in just 52 minutes.

Axelsen’s victory marks him as the first man to retain the Olympic men’s singles title since China’s Lin Dan in 2008 and 2012. Vitidsarn’s silver represents Thailand’s first-ever Olympic medal in badminton. Despite a strong start by Vitidsarn, Axelsen quickly found his rhythm, dominating both games with his powerful smashes and strategic play.

Zou Jingyuan Defends Parallel Bars Title

China’s Zou Jingyuan delivered a masterful performance on the parallel bars, retaining his Olympic title at the Paris Games. Zou, now only the second gymnast to achieve back-to-back Olympic titles on the apparatus, impressed with a faultless 16.200-point routine. Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun secured silver, while Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka took bronze.

Kovtun set a high standard with a 15.500-point routine, but Zou’s superior execution secured his victory. “I’m super excited for this result because coming to these Olympics, I had injuries,” the 26-year-old champion remarked.

Germany Triumphs in Mixed Team Relay Triathlon

Germany won gold in the mixed triathlon relay at the Paris Olympics, overcoming disruptions from illnesses affecting multiple teams. Laura Lindemann led Germany to victory in a thrilling sprint finish, narrowly defeating Taylor Knibb from the United States, with Britain’s Beth Potter securing bronze.

The event saw complications as some athletes fell ill after swimming in the River Seine. Belgium’s Claire Michel and Switzerland’s Adrien Briffod were among those affected, reportedly due to E.Coli and gastrointestinal infections, respectively. Norwegian competitor Vetle Bergsvik Thorn also reported a stomach bug.

The mixed relay involves a four-person team, each completing a 300-meter swim in the Seine, a 7-kilometer bike ride through Paris, and a 1.8-kilometer run.

These thrilling events highlight the dedication and resilience of athletes from around the world, making the Paris Olympics a memorable spectacle
