Jay Shah set to replace Greg Barclay as ICC chairman

Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to succeed Greg Barclay as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to a report by The Age.

Shah emerged as a strong contender for the role after Barclay, who has held the position since November 2020, announced his decision to step down during a video call with ICC directors on Tuesday night.

Barclay, who was re-elected in 2022, informed the board that he will not seek a third term, with his current tenure ending in November 2024. “ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November,” an ICC spokesperson told The Age.

Nominations for the next chair must be submitted by August 27, 2024, with an election to be held if there is more than one candidate. The new chair’s term is set to begin on December 1, 2024.

Shah, 35, would be following in the footsteps of previous Indian ICC chairs, including Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar. He has reportedly secured the backing of key ICC member nations, including England and Australia, to take on the role for a three-year term. If elected, Shah would become the youngest chairman in ICC history.

Shah’s potential appointment comes amid uncertainties regarding India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February to March next year.
