Jinnah Hospital Karachi Performs First-Ever Knee Cancer Surgery, Restores Young Patient’s Mobility
Karachi: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi, have successfully performed the hospital’s first knee cancer surgery, giving a 26-year-old patient a new chance at mobility through the implantation of an artificial knee joint.
Dr. Farukh, a member of the surgical team, shared that the patient was diagnosed with cancer affecting the knee and lower leg. A joint team of orthopedic and plastic surgeons carried out the complex four-hour procedure, during which the tumor was removed and replaced with a prosthetic knee.

Post-surgery tests confirmed the complete removal of cancer.

The artificial knee, valued between Rs. 1 million and Rs. 1.1 million, was provided free of cost by the hospital.

Globally, such implants last between 20–25 years, ensuring long-term mobility.

The overall cost of the surgery was estimated at Rs. 3.5 million, but the hospital performed it entirely free of charge for the patient.
The orthopedic team included Dr. Farukh, Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushal, while the plastic surgery team featured Dr. Agha Waseem, Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.
Pakistan Develops Breast Cancer Prevention Vaccine
In another remarkable development, Pakistan has also achieved a major breakthrough in women’s healthcare with the creation of a breast cancer prevention vaccine.
The Institute of Public Health Punjab has formulated the vaccine and is now working on plans for large-scale production of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja praised the initiative, saying the government is committed to advancing healthcare facilities. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Javed Akram explained that administering three doses of the vaccine to girls aged 12 years can provide lifelong protection against breast cancer.
