José Caballero Commits to Representing Panama at 2026 World Baseball Classic
New York Yankees utility player José Caballero has confirmed that he will represent Panama in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC).
Speaking about his decision, Caballero shared his pride: “I’m always up for playing with my country.”
Caballero was Panama’s starting third baseman during the 2023 WBC and could reprise that role in 2026. His versatility has been a hallmark throughout his Major League Baseball career, where he has appeared at every defensive position except catcher.
Strong 2025 Season Performance
Splitting the 2025 MLB season between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees, Caballero has posted a .230/.334/.331 slash line with four home runs in 107 games. While his batting numbers may not stand out, his defensive ability and adaptability remain his biggest strengths.
In 2025, Caballero has been particularly impressive in right field, where he has recorded two Outs Above Average (OAA) and six Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), proving to be a reliable presence on defense.
Elite Base Stealing Threat
Beyond the glove, Caballero’s speed makes him one of MLB’s premier base stealers. After swiping 44 bags in 2024, he has already stolen 41 bases this season and is closing in on his first-ever 50-steal campaign. Combined with a career-high 12.6% walk rate, his ability to get on base and apply pressure makes him a valuable asset.
For Panama, a team that leans more on speed, contact hitting, and plate discipline than pure power, Caballero’s style of play fits seamlessly.
Panama’s Roster Outlook
Panama’s 2026 WBC squad is shaping up with MLB players Iván Herrera and Edmundo Sosa committed, along with rising minor league talents such as José Ramos and Leo Jiménez. The team made history in the last WBC by earning their first-ever win, defeating Taiwan, but missed the quarterfinals on a tiebreaker.
This time, the goal is clear: advance beyond the group stage for the first time. Caballero will likely be at the heart of that push.
