Padres Rally Late to Defeat Diamondbacks 3-2 in Another Thrilling Finish
San Diego, August 7 – The San Diego Padres pulled off another dramatic comeback on Wednesday night, scoring two runs in the ninth inning to edge out the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 at Petco Park. The victory marked San Diego’s ninth win in their last 11 games, as the team continues its push for postseason contention.
O’Hearn, Iglesias Power the Comeback
Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Ryan O’Hearn sparked the rally with a game-tying home run off Arizona reliever Kyle Backus (0-2) — his first homer off a left-handed pitcher this season.
Moments later, Xander Bogaerts doubled and advanced to third on a well-placed sacrifice bunt. Then came José Iglesias, who delivered the go-ahead RBI single to right field, giving the Padres their first lead of the night.
Miller Secures the Save
Closer Mason Miller earned his 21st save of the season, working around a walk in the ninth to shut the door on Arizona’s offense.
Reliever Adrian Morejon (9-4) picked up the win, allowing just one hit across two innings of solid work.
Diamondbacks Strike Early But Fall Short
Arizona struck first in the opening inning, with Corbin Carroll hitting a towering solo home run — his 23rd of the season — over the right-center field pool deck. The Diamondbacks extended their lead to 2-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Alek Thomas, following a tense sequence in which Padres starter Nestor Cortes hit back-to-back batters to load the bases.
Making his debut for San Diego after being traded from Milwaukee, Cortes showed signs of rust. He gave up two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and three walks.
Back-to-Back Late Heroics
The Padres have made a habit of late-inning magic lately. Just a night earlier, they scored five runs in the 11th inning to defeat Arizona 10-5. Wednesday’s comeback further underlines their growing momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.
What’s Next?
San Diego will look to continue their winning streak in the upcoming series, while Arizona hopes to regroup and regain ground in the standings. With players like O’Hearn, Bogaerts, and Iglesias stepping up, the Padres are proving they can rise to the occasion when it matters most.
