Lahore zoo returns to govt control after private firm exits contract

Lahore Zoo Management Returns to Wildlife Department After Private Contractor Withdraws

Lahore, Pakistan — The management of Lahore Zoo has officially been taken over by the Department of Wildlife following the withdrawal of the private company previously awarded the operational contract.

The private firm, which began managing ticketing, parking, and visitor services from January 1, 2025, ended its contract after just over six months of operation. The contract, valued at Rs 500 million, included responsibility for all visitor-related services.tribune

Contract Termination and Financial Matters

Sources reveal that the company owes over Rs 250 million to the government, along with outstanding payments such as electricity bills. Zoo officials confirmed that all operational duties have now been resumed by the zoo administration.

Pricing Controversy and Public Reaction

The private company had proposed raising ticket prices and bundling paid access to popular attractions like the dinosaur hall, reptile house, or aquarium with each ticket. However, the Captive Wildlife Management Committee (CWMC) rejected the request, emphasizing the importance of keeping the zoo affordable for all visitors.

This stance aligns with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, who prioritize accessible and high-quality recreational facilities for the public.

After the company introduced bundled ticket packages that required visitors to pay for extra attractions alongside entry, public backlash grew. Senior Minister Aurangzeb and Punjab Secretary of Forests & Wildlife, Mudassir Riaz Malik, intervened to halt this practice immediately.

What’s Next for Lahore Zoo?

The private contractor reportedly decided to exit the agreement to avoid further financial losses and has assured authorities it will clear all pending dues. On Thursday, the zoo administration officially resumed control.

The CWMC has convened an emergency meeting today to discuss the future management and operational plans for Lahore Zoo.
