Lakers starter could be playing for extension next season

(Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail)
Los Angeles Lakers star forward Rui Hachimura has a golden opportunity to earn a long-term deal with the team by delivering a stellar performance in the upcoming season. Entering the final year of his contract, Hachimura could secure his future with the Lakers if he maintains his impressive shooting and improved defensive play.

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, while the Lakers are focused on preserving salary cap space for the summer of 2027, Hachimura’s consistent excellence could make him worth the investment.

Since joining the Lakers in 2023, Hachimura has posted over 50% field goal shooting and above 40% from three-point range in each full season, along with notable defensive improvement. Experts believe his performance could reach another level if he spends the full season playing alongside Luka Dončić.

Last season, the 27-year-old Japanese forward averaged 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds over 59 games (57 starts). He elevated his game in the playoffs, averaging 14.8 points and 4.6 rebounds across five postseason appearances.

Hachimura is set to earn $18,259,259 next season, and if he further polishes his game, he could land a lucrative extension with the Lakers.
