Lesotho Kicks Off Women’s Softball Season with Exciting Tournament in Maseru

Lesotho has officially opened its 2025 Women’s Softball season with a vibrant tournament in the capital city, Maseru, bringing together sports, culture, and celebration.

Organised by the Lesotho Baseball and Softball Association (LBSA) Women’s Commission, the event took place at Ha Mabote Police Playing Grounds as part of Women’s Month celebrations and to mark the Basotho New Year.

Four Teams, One Champion

The competition featured four strong teams β€” Parentos, Queens, Gladiators, and B. Killers.
After a round-robin stage, Queens claimed victory in the final with a commanding 9-1 win over Parentos, while Gladiators secured third place.

More Than Just a Game

LBSA President Tseliso Lemphane explained that the event was more than just the start of the softball season.

β€œIt was also part of the Basotho New Year, which marks the end of the dry winter season and the start of spring β€” a time of renewal and new beginnings,” he said.

The tournament was held under the theme β€œEmbracing Diversity and Celebrating Children with Special Needs”, highlighting both inclusivity and community spirit.

Challenges in the Sport

Despite the success of the event, Lemphane noted a long-standing challenge:

β€œFor over three decades, we’ve struggled with a lack of equipment. Teams still share gloves, helmets, bats, and other gear during matches,” he added.

Looking Ahead

The LBSA hopes that this season will attract more support for women’s sports in Lesotho, both in terms of resources and recognition, paving the way for future tournaments and a stronger softball community.
