ISLAMABAD: Maintenance and repair work at the Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital (FGPC) in Islamabad has come to a standstill following the dissolution of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak-PWD) and the delay in the Capital Development Authority (CDA) taking over maintenance responsibilities.
The update came through a written response by Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal during a National Assembly session, in reply to a question from MNA Mah Jabeen Khan Abbasi.
CDA Yet to Assume Control After Pak-PWD Abolishment
Minister Kamal confirmed that Pak-PWD had previously handled all maintenance tasks, including infrastructure repairs, but since the department’s abolishment, no formal transfer of duties to CDA has taken place. As a result, ongoing repair work has been put on hold.
He added that despite repeated requests, CDA has yet to assume full responsibility, leaving the hospital to manage with its own limited staff and resources.
Hospital Functioning Despite Challenges
Rejecting claims that the pediatric ward was in poor condition, the minister clarified that:
-
No leakages occurred during the recent rains.
-
All air conditioners are fully operational.
-
Medical equipment is regularly maintained under a preventive maintenance plan and remains functional.
While acknowledging that the hospital building is old and in need of periodic repairs, Kamal emphasized that patient care services continue uninterrupted.
New Project to Upgrade Hospital Facilities
To address long-term infrastructure issues, the government has approved a new project titled:
“Strengthening and Upgradation of Cardiology Department and Other Wards of Federal Government Polyclinic (PGMI), Hospital Islamabad.”
The project, currently at the feasibility stage, has been allocated Rs. 50 million. A Request for Proposal (RFP) has already been submitted to the Ministry of National Health Services for approval, paving the way for feasibility studies and eventual civil works to modernize hospital facilities.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to enhance patient care and improve overall service delivery standards at the Polyclinic Hospital.
