Major Expansion Planned at Port Qasim to Boost Cement, Clinker Exports: Minister

Govt Announces Major Steps to Boost Cement and Clinker Exports via Port Qasim

Islamabad – Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s cement and clinker exports through improved port infrastructure and enhanced operational capacity, with a strong focus on Port Qasim.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the minister confirmed that a subcommittee of all major ports, led by Port Qasim Authority (PQA) Chairman Rear Admiral Syed Moazzam Ilyas, has finalized recommendations to accelerate export growth.

One of the key measures includes the construction of two new multi-purpose berths at Port Qasim, which will significantly expand cargo handling capacity and ensure faster turnaround for export consignments.

To further support logistics, plans are in place to develop an additional storage facility with a capacity of 30,000 metric tons. The project is expected to start by the end of 2025, once formal approvals are completed.

The minister also announced that permanent repair and upgradation work on existing storage facilities will begin soon, with completion targeted by December 2025. This step is expected to ensure uninterrupted export operations and minimize delays.

In a major development, the PQA will also collaborate with the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) to explore the use of the underutilized Sahiwal berth for clinker exports, opening new opportunities for the sector.

According to officials, these measures are part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s export competitiveness, modernize port operations, and generate greater economic activity.
