Messi Shines as Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and Paraguay Book Spots for FIFA World Cup 2026
MONTEVIDEO (September 5, 2025):
Lionel Messi lit up Buenos Aires with a brace in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela, while Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay also secured their places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Messi’s Magical Night in Buenos Aires
Already qualified, Argentina thrilled 80,000 fans at the Mas Monumental Stadium, where Messi scored in the 39th and 80th minutes. It was an emotional occasion, marking the Argentine captain’s last home qualifier.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who will be 39 at the next World Cup, remains central to Lionel Scaloni’s squad as they prepare to defend their title. Messi’s family, including his three sons and father Jorge, joined him before kickoff in a touching pre-match moment.
Uruguay Qualify Under Bielsa
In Montevideo, Uruguay sealed qualification with a convincing 3-0 win over Peru. Goals from Rodrigo Aguirre, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and Federico Viñas set the stage for celebrations at the historic Estadio Centenario.
Head coach Marcelo Bielsa, now 70, has guided his third national team to a World Cup. Despite a mixed qualifying campaign, Uruguay — champions in 1930 and 1950 — are heading to another global stage.
Colombia Cruise Past Bolivia
Colombia booked their ticket with a 3-0 victory over Bolivia. Veteran playmaker James Rodríguez opened the scoring in the 34th minute, followed by goals from Jhon Córdoba (74’) and Juan Fernando Quintero (late on).
The comfortable win confirmed Colombia’s place at next summer’s tournament.
Paraguay Return After 15 Years
In Asunción, Paraguay earned the point they needed with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. This result means Paraguay will compete in their ninth World Cup and first since 2010.
