NBA Returns to China After Six Years — Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns Set for Historic Match in Macao
After six long years, the NBA is making a highly anticipated return to China, reigniting excitement among millions of basketball fans. The Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns have landed in Macao, where they will play two sold-out pre-season games this weekend — marking the league’s first appearance in the region since 2019.
This comeback is part of a five-year collaboration between the NBA and Sands China, the Macao branch of Las Vegas Sands. Fans across China are thrilled to witness the world’s top basketball league back in action, as tickets — priced up to £46 — sold out within minutes of release.
Massive Fan Excitement in China
Basketball remains one of the most popular sports in China, with an estimated 300 million players across the country. Local fans are sharing their excitement online, celebrating the return of live NBA games.
“I am very excited for NBA’s return. This will be my first time watching them play live,” said Kevin Chen, a 19-year-old student from Macao.
Historic Roots and Strong Ties
The NBA’s connection with China dates back to 1979 and strengthened with the rise of Yao Ming, one of the most iconic players in the league’s history. Between 2004 and 2019, 17 NBA teams participated in games across China, building a huge following that continues today.
Nets Forward Zeng Fanbo Draws Local Support
Among the players drawing special attention is Zeng Fanbo, a 22-year-old forward from Harbin, China. Joining the Nets as an Exhibit 10 signee, Zeng said he’s proud to represent his country in front of home fans:
“It’s an honor to play in China. I want to work hard and set a good example for Asian players,” he told reporters.
NBA Leadership on Global Connection
NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum emphasized the league’s mission to inspire fans worldwide:
“It’s very important for us to bring the live game experience to as many NBA fans around the world as possible. Our goal is to connect people everywhere through basketball.”
A Step Forward for Global Sports
While global challenges remain, the NBA’s return to China demonstrates the power of sports to unite people across borders. As both teams prepare for tip-off in Macao, millions of fans across Asia and beyond will be tuning in — celebrating not just a game, but a new chapter in international basketball.
