Delayed Concussion Forces Oli Mathis Out of U20 World Championship

Ahead of New Zealand’s semi-final clash against France in the World Championship U20, the Baby Blacks were dealt a blow with the absence of rising rugby star Oli Mathis.

The promising All Blacks Sevens youngster, who had impressed early in the tournament with one group-stage appearance, was ruled out after developing delayed concussion symptoms. The 2025 event, held in Italy, had been an opportunity for Mathis to showcase his versatility, but his campaign was cut short.

Speaking on the What a Lad podcast hosted by former player James Marshall, Mathis opened up about the incident.

“It sucked – I had a delayed concussion after getting hit in the maul. About 20 minutes after the game, I started vomiting while going for a drug test. I even forgot where I’d put my bag,” Mathis recalled.

Initially, he rested for a few days, hoping to recover, but symptoms worsened when he tried light exercise.

“I got dizzy, had pounding headaches – it was no good. I told the doctor, and we decided it was best I put my head first. You only get one,” he said, admitting he wasn’t keen to miss the rest of the competition.

The Waikato talent, known for playing both No.7 and No.14 in the Bunnings NPC, has sparked debate among fans over his long-term position. Marshall quizzed him about becoming a hybrid player, a prospect Mathis says he’s open to exploring.

While the Baby Blacks missed his presence in the tournament, Mathis’s decision to prioritise recovery underscores the growing awareness of player welfare in rugby.
