KP Reports Surge in Post-Flood Infections, Over 12,000 Cases Confirmed
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Health Department has reported 5,111 new cases of various infections, taking the total count to 12,313 since the devastating floods. Among these, respiratory illnesses remain the most common, with 3,668 confirmed cases so far.
In just the last 24 hours, 381 new cases of scabies have been recorded, pushing the total to 1,200. Eye infections have also spread rapidly in Peshawar, now affecting 1,224 people, while seven cases of Leishmania have been confirmed in flood-hit regions.
The surge in health issues comes after severe flooding and heavy rainfall wreaked havoc across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Tragically, more than 200 lives have been lost, with KP’s Buner district suffering the highest casualties.
The floods have destroyed homes, schools, and key infrastructure, leaving thousands displaced. Relief operations are ongoing, but challenges remain high. In one tragic incident, a government rescue helicopter crashed during operations, claiming the lives of five crew members. Many others are still missing, as authorities continue search and relief efforts.
Government agencies have released emergency funds, set up medical camps, and issued health alerts in several districts to curb the spread of disease and provide support to affected communities.
