Pakistan Railways Ends Contractor System for Lahore Station Porters
Oct 27, 2025
Pakistan Railways has announced a major reform at Lahore Railway Station, ending the 25-year-old contractor system for porters. According to an official notification, porters will now operate directly under the supervision of the station manager, eliminating the need for private contractors.

The move means that porters will no longer have to pay commissions from their daily earnings — a long-standing practice that had affected their income and job stability.
New Guidelines for Porters
Under the new system, each porter will charge Rs. 70 per trip and can carry a maximum of 40 kilograms of luggage per trip. These rates aim to ensure transparency and fairness for both passengers and workers.

Improved Working Conditions
Railway officials called the decision a significant step toward financial empowerment and better accountability. By removing the middlemen, Pakistan Railways hopes to enhance working conditions for hundreds of porters who depend on station-based work for their livelihoods.
