Golden Knights’ Alex Pietrangelo Keeps Door Open for Return Despite Hip Injury

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the ice this season, despite being placed on long-term injured reserve with a serious hip issue.

The 35-year-old veteran was initially expected to undergo bilateral femur reconstruction surgery, a procedure that likely would have sidelined him for the entire season and cast doubt on the future of his career. Even Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon admitted at the time that Pietrangelo might never play again.

However, Pietrangelo revealed during a Monday news conference that he has responded well to rehabilitation and is taking his recovery “day by day.” He still has two years remaining on his seven-year, $61.6 million contract.

“Nothing’s really concrete,” Pietrangelo said. “I’m going to go through my process and see where it goes.”

Long-Standing Injury Worsened Last Season

Pietrangelo admitted his hip issues had been ongoing but became especially problematic during last season. The pain eventually forced him to withdraw from representing Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, a tough decision for the two-time Stanley Cup champion.

“Last year was when it really took a toll,” he explained. “I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until the end of the season.”

Despite the injury, Pietrangelo said he pushed through in hopes of helping Vegas make a deep playoff run. The Golden Knights went on to win the Pacific Division but were eliminated in the second round by eventual Western Conference champions Edmonton.

Staying Close to the Team

While focusing on his recovery, Pietrangelo has chosen to remain in Las Vegas to support his teammates. He continues to be a presence in the locker room and is even offering mentorship to younger players within the organization.

As a respected leader with 637 career points and two Stanley Cup championships — one with St. Louis in 2019 and another with Vegas in 2023 — his experience remains invaluable.

“I love being part of a locker room,” Pietrangelo said. “To come here, see everybody, and still be part of the group has been really fun.”

Beyond hockey, Pietrangelo emphasized the importance of being healthy enough to enjoy life with his wife and children. For now, he is keeping all options open as rehab continues, leaving fans hopeful for a potential late-season return.
