Punjab Launches Major Clean Water Project in 16 Districts
Oct 27, 2025
The Punjab government has launched a major initiative to ensure access to clean drinking water for citizens across the province. In the first phase, modern water filtration and treatment plants will be installed in 16 districts to combat water contamination and improve public health.
Punjab Saaf Pani Authority CEO Naveed Ahmad briefed officials during a meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, highlighting the project’s progress and goals.
Clean Water for Millions
According to the Housing Department spokesperson, filtration plants will be installed in areas affected by arsenic and unsafe groundwater. In addition, surface water treatment plants are planned at Dharabi, Mairwal, and Phalina dams to enhance water quality in nearby regions.
To further expand access, four bottling plants will be set up in Khushab, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan, providing citizens with 19-litre bottles of clean drinking water at affordable rates.
Phase One to Benefit 29 Million People
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026, directly benefiting around 29 million people across Punjab. The provincial cabinet has already approved the project’s operations and management plan.
Filtration plants will also be installed in government offices, schools, mosques, seminaries, and police stations to reduce water theft and ensure reliable access to safe water.
